First time I have seen this product and I have not modified my exhaust in any way. What does this product do performance wise? Is this just a connector? Thanks.

its a gasket, it has two purposes, more widely a problem on other engines other than the R18 but P2R made an application for the R18 also.
Its made from pure graphite which has a extreme high temperature rating which would be an issue on turbo cars where the stock gasket cant hold up and can burn up, The other purpose is some low quality or used manifolds dont have a completely straight flange anymore and these crush seal and can help seal uneven exhaust flanges
