(Reuters) - Honda will return to Formula One in 2015 as McLaren engine partners, replacing Mercedes, sources close to the company said on Wednesday.

Honda's Chief Executive Takanobu Ito is set to make an official announcement as early as Thursday, one of the sources added.

The Japanese automaker quit the sport at the end of 2008, handing over their team to then-principal Ross Brawn who went on to win both titles in 2009 with Mercedes-powered Brawn GP.

One source said Honda hoped Formula One's new engine regulations for 2014 would help develop technology for its mass volume road cars, adding: "That incubator aspect of the sport makes Honda's participation worthwhile."

Formula One is set to introduce a new 1.6 litre V6 engine next year aided by high-power turbo technology with energy recovery systems.

The news about Honda's return to Formula One was reported earlier on Wednesday in Japanese media including public broadcaster NHK and Asahi newspaper.

"There is nothing we can say at the moment," Honda spokesman Shigeki Endo said.

McLaren are committed to using engines made by Mercedes, their former shareholders, next year but have not revealed their plans for beyond that date. A team spokesman had no comment on the reports.

The link-up with McLaren, the second most successful team in the sport after Ferrari in terms of race wins and drivers' titles, would revive one of the greatest Formula One partnerships.

Honda had little success with their own team but powered McLaren to multiple championships with the late Brazilian triple champion Ayrton Senna and French four times champion Alain Prost between 1988 and 1992.

The partnership in 1988 was the most dominant in Formula One history, with Senna and Prost winning 15 of the 16 races.

The sources said Honda also hoped renewed participation in the sport will help boost vehicle sales, especially in Japan, Asia and Europe where Formula One is popular.

The two sources declined to be named as they were not authorised to speak about the matter.

Honda made its Formula One debut at the 1964 German Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring. The company's first grand prix win came just a year later at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City and they then withdrew after the 1968 season.

They returned to the sport as an engine provider in 1983 and departed again in 1992.

In 2000, Honda made a comeback with BAR, which then became the Honda team in 2006. The only success in that period was Jenson Button's 2006 win in Hungary.

Button, world champion in 2009, is now a McLaren driver along with Mexican Sergio Perez.

Deff wouldn't be a realistic option but man would it be fun :vtec:
It would be a ton of fun. Top Gear UK had an episode where one of the guys drives a race car, f1 like forgot if a real f1 or similar and it is a very intense experience, you have to be fit.
At the same time I think they change the engine every 2 races, gear box something similar.

There are actually older version for sale for big bucks, or one can rent a real F1 Ferrari and drive it on Ferrari's track. Obviously for the very comfortable financially but I would do it, or maybe will do it one day (Hope we still have oil those days ;) )

I would presume that the cost is similar to the hardcore drag racers who rebuild the engine after every run. My grandfather before he retired was a director in the racing department of the auto club so when I was younger (like 3 to 16) I got to go to all sorts of races like the Indy 500 and such

Could McLaren Be Preparing a Honda-Powered 911-Fighter?

Now that McLaren has a road car division pumping out vaguely NSX-like supercars (the 12C) along with hypercars such as the P1, the possibilities have enthusiasts drooling. McLaren has already announced that its next production car will be an entry-level 911-fighter below the 12C. With Honda’s recently announced F1 partnership with McLaren, could McLaren’s next road car be powered by an engine developed by Honda?

The idea is not as crazy as it may sound. Back when Mercedes-Benz had a majority stake in McLaren, the two produced the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, a 615-hp super coupe powered by a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 developed by AMG. As the world’s foremost engine manufacturer, Honda claims it partnered with McLaren because it could not pass up the opportunity to develop the new generation of small displacement, turbocharged V-6 engines for racing’s premier series. In 2014, all Formula 1 teams switch from 2.4-liter V-8 engines to 1.6-liter turbocharged V-6s.
Honda formal announcement last week revealed that the automaker would return to Formula 1 racing for the 2015 season as the engine supplier to its former partner McLaren. The renamed McLaren-Honda team recalls the tandem’s dominance in the late 80s and early 90s. From 1988 to 1991, McLaren-Honda won both the F1 driver’s and constructors’ titles four times, racking up 44 grand prix wins with the likes of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at the wheel. Their reign is the stuff of legend – the 1988 McLaren-Honda MP4/4 won 15 of 16 races that season.

And just like that, the idea of a powertrain derived from a Honda racing engine trickling down into an entry-level chassis developed by McLaren is a bit more believable. While some might suggest that McLaren’s upcoming “entry-level” car is still likely to get a less powerful version of the 12C’s 3.8-liter V-8, we want to hear from you: Should McLaren consider Honda-sourced engine technology for its upcoming 911-fighter?

McLaren Kills Honda Rumors

McLaren has officially nixed the notion of using Honda as an engine supplier for the upcoming P13. Rumors began kicking up earlier in the week that pointed to the two automakers joining forces for the new McLaren 911 Turbo fighter.

While speaking with Autocar, an unnamed source said that at the moment, there's no connection between the deal that will see Honda supply McLaren with Formula One engines and the forthcoming coupe. The source went on to say that Honda won't have any involvement with the P13.

So, what's likely to power the newest addition to the McLaren stable? Good money rests on P13 getting around with a detuned version of the 3.8-liter V8 currently found in the MP4-12C. If that turns out to be the case, buyers can expect to have around 450 horsepower at their command. We can imagine worse ways to travel.

The deal between Honda and McLaren starts in 2015 and is only for the F1 team, but Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that they are being very open and sharing automotive tech as well.

“It’s a pure Formula 1 contract, but we’ve already been looking at automotive technology and we’re sharing that very openly,” said Whitmarsh at last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

I wonder what the first 'McLaronda' will look like. :giggle:
