2012 Honda Civic is having difficulty starting. Cranking, but taking a long time to start. Crank sometimes sounds like it is straining/slipping?
No problems while driving, only when starting. No DTC codes. Replaced battery and problem unchanged. Not cold here/no change in weather.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

Sounds super weird at the beginning but normal after a couple cranks.

If it eventually starts I'd suspect the fuel pump as i think it has an internal regulator that could be allowing fuel to drain and lose pressure after it sits.

Might be two issues with that weird starting at the beginning though.

I'm assuming it eventually starts if you crank long enough?

Sorry, yes, 9 times out of 10 it will start after a few cranks. I posted the video of the worst starting attempt I'd recorded because I thought it would ultimately be more useful in diagnosing the issue, but that may have only confused things.

I want to rule out simple electrical problems first. I went to check the starter relay, but the owner's manual doesn't identify the relays, only the fuses. Diagrams I found online (attached) indicate there are 3 different starter relays. I don't understand why there would be three. But the indicated starter relays are R2 and R5 in the engine compartment and R3 in the passenger compartment.

I pulled R2 alone and the car wouldn't crank at all, which is what I was expecting.

I pulled R5 alone and the car still started in the same difficult start.

I checked R3 in the passenger compartment, and was surprised to see that no relay was even installed there. I moved the R6 power window relay there to test but still had the same difficult start.

Are there really three starter relays? Are they redundant? Or do all three need to be in working order to deliver full power to the starter?

I’m not sure where that came from, but it depends on which engine (r18 or k24), and if it’s auto/manual trans. This has some info on which pertains to what model

It is an R18 engine. Automatic. 2012 Honda Civic Coupe EX 1.8L. No keyless entry.

Why are there 3 different starter relays?

I don’t have a wiring diagram to intelligently answer how the relays work, or why there are multiple. Honda provides access to wiring guides and info at the link below if you’d like to dig into it deeper, but it is $30 for a day of access.

I've decided to take the car to a shop to have the starter replaced.

It feels like an electrical problem, but everything checks out with the battery, fuses, relays, etc. So I believe the brushes inside the starter are wearing out.

Thank you.
