2014 Honda Civic Receiving CVTs?

TOV received word by email from one of our dealer contacts today that they have received their first allocation notice from Honda on 2014 Civics. At this point they are only seeing EX-L Navi models, but the system is showing that these particular trim levels will be equipped with CVT transmissions. This development would tend to suggest that the 2014 Civics will be getting the new Earth Dreams DOHC 1.8L engines with direct injection, but it's certainly possible that Honda is keeping the current R18s and simply mating them to the Earth Dreams CVT. We should know something for sure fairly soon.

For what it's worth, here's the list of available colors for the EX-L Navi models.

CRYSTAL BLACK PEARL/BLACK
DYNO BLUE PEARL/GRAY
KONA COFFEE METALLIC/BLACK
URBAN TITANIUM METALLIC/BEIGE
CRYSTAL BLACK PEARL/GRAY
MODERN STEEL METALLIC/GRAY
MODERN STEEL METALLIC/BLACK
CRIMSON PEARL/BEIGE
ALABASTER SILVER METALLIC/BLACK
ALABASTER SILVER METALLIC/GRAY
WHITE ORCHID PEARL/BLACK
WHITE ORCHID PEARL/BEIGE

Automotive News says this info is incorrect, and there will be no earth dreams engines/transmissions until a 2016 redesign.

Civic: Contrary to press reports, the Civic will not receive an Earth Dreams engine until its redesign in spring 2016.

I think I will proceed under the assumption that one won't be on the Civic until the next generation. I doubt my old 1997 Hyundai will make it that far, . . . and the new Earth Dreams mechanicals will probably come in about half way through my loan on the next car I get. I am tempted to hold out, . . . . try to limp my car along until they actually put that powertrain in the Civics. Possible? That's for another topic.

I can only hope that at least the transmission finds its way in for 2014.

Ohhhhh I hope that is truly the case!

I know that some people do not like a CVT transmission, . . . but from seeing people talk about the Accord's CVT, I think Honda has a good grasp on the technology, and I would definitely be getting that tech in MY Civic!

What is the Benifits of a cvt in terms of performance. I do not care about gas milage or anything. I wanna know if its better on a road course or drags strip compared to the LSD I have now?

From what I can tell, . . . they also don't hurt on performance either, but of course, that won't be known until one shows up and is tested. As it is now, they run mid to upper 9 seconds to get to 60. Even if it were the same 0-60 run, I'd still be happy with it because of the extra MPG savings.

Another Civic forum confirmed that the 5 speed auto will be replaced with the CVT.

Good idea or not, . . . Nissan Sentra already has one, with fuel economy gains, . . . 2014 Corolla has one [again with MPG gains], so though it may not be what many people like [the CVT transmission], the savings in gas mileage will bring in buyers.

I'll still be getting one. Looking forward to test driving it.
