A Sydney design team set a new Guinness World Record after its souped-up sofa hit 101 mph on an airport runway, The (Sydney) Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.
Powered by a Suzuki GSX 1400 motorcycle engine, the leather two-seater -- complete with a handy coffee table -- was built by race car and bike designers Evolution Motorsport.
"It's the oddest vehicle we've ever built," project leader Paul McKinnon said.
"With race cars you can use the aerodynamic body kit dictated by the regulations for each series. But with the couch it was a matter of just doing what we could.
"We kept it as low-profile as we could, and tried to break the airflow with the coffee table."
The speed, set at Camden Airport in Sydney's southwest, shatters the existing speedy home furnishings Guinness mark set by Britain's Marek Turowski, who clocked 92 mph on a motorized couch in 2008.
