I'm wondering if I am being bamboozled. Dealership told me that to switch over my oem '12 Si tires and tpms sensors to my '06 RSX S rims, mount and balance all four wheels, will take about 2 1/2 hours and that the techs hate this sort of job becuase there's such a risk of damage to rims and sensors. This dealership is only a few years old and has the latest of everything equipment-wise, including indoor automatic car wash.
So I was originally quoted $99.84 for the job. Great. That's what two other places wanted, too. Today, went to set up appointment, and no, there's a $52 labor charge. So I asked what the $99 charge was, since there are no parts involved. He said there's also a potential $52 TPMS reprogramming charge if the sensors lose their signal. Really, Now its potentially $200? Why would they lose their signal?
He also said they have to mask off all eight rim edges with painters' tape to protect them . . . its a real involved process to change over the rims (I can tape of 8 wheels in under 5 minutes). I set up an appt for Monday for the $152. I doubt the sensors should lose their signal and they don't need re-programming for the new rims.
What are your thoughts? I know that my thoughts are that I hate TPMS sensors because they have just created a new profit center for tire guys. Who needs sensors? You mean you can't tell when you're running on a flat?
