These affected vehicles will be involved in a recall totaling some 800k units. The recall involves a malfunction of the ignition interlock which may allow the key to be removed even when the transmission shift lever is not in 'Park'.

If that were to happen and the driver forgets to set the parking brake (and we all know how many people driving automatics do so….), then there's the possibility the aforementioned models could roll away.

"Honda has received several complaints about such malfunctions in these vehicles and is aware of a small number of related incidents, including two that allegedly resulted in minor injuries," the company said in a statement today.
"Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from American Honda," it added.

The recall affects approximately 318,000 Honda Odyssey and 259,000 Honda Pilot vehicles from the 2003-2004 model years and around 230,000 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2003-2006 model years in the U.S.

The Japanese carmaker will be sending notifications to owners of the affected models in February 2013. To see if their vehicles require repair, customers can either go on-line to www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (800) 999-1009 for Honda owners or (800) 382-2238 for Acura owners, and selecting option 4.

MARKHAM, ON – Dec. 12, 2012 –Honda Canada will recall approximately 23,300 Honda Odyssey and 12,400 Honda Pilot vehicles from the 2003-2004 model years and approximately 16,600 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2003-2006 model years in Canada to address a potential malfunction of the ignition interlock feature of these vehicles. Honda Canada has received several complaints about such failures in these vehicles, but has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue.

The ignition interlock mechanism can be damaged or worn under specific types of usage. If this happens, it may become possible to remove the ignition key when the shift lever is not in Park. If the transmission is not in Park and the parking brake is not set, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of an accident.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will be sent in late January 2013. In addition to contacting customers by mail, at that time, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require inspection by going on-line to www.honda.ca/recalls and www.acura.ca/recalls or by calling (888) 9HONDA9 for Honda owners or (888) 9ACURA9 for Acura owners.
