Acura MDX Transmission problems! HELPPPP!!!

So my mothers Acura MDX (Sorry its not a civic but its still honda ;) ) Transmission went out and the mechanic is trying to charge her around $5000 for a used one for everything (the transmission, installation, shipping of the tranny, etc). I believe the honda dealership was the same price.

Now I am no automechanic but I did some simple research and found out that she can buy a used tranny from ( http://www.autopartsfair.com/acura-...ed_transmissions.html?campaign=theautochannel ) at about $1500. I did a simple ''how much does swapping out a transmission cost'' google search and concluded that is should be about $300-$400. What numbers do you think are correct?

Please help as we are on vacation and trying to get this done in a timely matter so we can return home. I do not want her to get ripped off and you now how some women can be when it comes to mechanical stuff... Thanks for your help! (expect some new civic updates to my own ride in about a week if this gets done ;) )

I'm not sure how complex the job is on the mdx (hour wise). Any dealership could give you a labor charge alone (# of hrs). Saying that, you're probably looking at close to $110/hr from Acura. I'm seeing a number of quotes online from users on Acura forums --around $5k on a mdx transmission.

You could ask if they'll install one of the transmissions you found online

$300-400 sounds way too cheap of a price for labor. Check to see if there are any shops that work on trans(like a Mr. Transmission) in your area and see if they can shoot you a quote.

Its at a dedicated transmission shop. We actually drove it to the place.. We had a dealership look at it and they said it needed to be replaced and we had a specialty shop look at it and they tried to see if they could repair it but they said it needed to be replaced too.. Its at Flathead Transmission in Kalispell, Montana
Was the car towed to Acura- is it there now? Nomar brings up a good point about calling a dedicated transmission shop.
